Club Photo Shoot - May 2018
After a few years we finally thought it was time to get some updated photos of the team! We are very grateful to Heather Gibson, who traveled down to Dumfries to take the photos for us, check out out photos below, and have a look at some of Heather's photography using the link above!

Loch Ken Trip - April 2018
This month we have been lucky enough to be able to squeeze in a trip to Loch Ken for a change of scenery and great day of rowing with NARC. After an early start we got the boats set up and took to the water in four quads, with our boat, Elizabeth Crichton, getting a long awaited run out on the water. After a strong 15km, we headed to lunch and thawed out with some soup and a jacket potato.
After lunch it was back to the water, as we headed out in an eight and another quad. this gave a great experience for some of the team to get a rare experience of sweep rowing, with the benefits hopefully being taken forward into the racing season. Overall it was a great trip and something we definitely hope to do again over the coming months. Check out the photos below and stay tuned for more updates throughout the coming racing season!

School Visits - March 2018
Recently Club Captain, Matthew Leslie, was able to take advantage of the resources at our boat club and bring two ergos into a local primary school to give a group of children the chance to experience some rowing. It proved to be a very successful trip, with the kids - and even some staff - all getting involved and giving it a good go on the ergos, not to mention also rocking our club headbands!
This is something which CUCBC and NARC (our sister club) are looking at doing more of in the next school term, in a push to get more children involved in rowing. If you or your school/child's school would be interested, please let us or NARC know! In the meanwhile, check out some of the photos below!
Thank you to Crichton Foundation for providing us with the ergo.

Summer Training - March 2018
It's been a long - and at times very cold - Winter for all of us at CUCBC, but as the clocks go forward and the weather begins to improve, those hard and painful stints on the ergos look to be coming to an end. We have now began to implement our Summer training timetable, which will see us out on the water three times a week, with an optional session on Wednesday night focusing on weights and core work. The schedule is as follows:
Monday: 3:30pm-5:30pm (Water Session)
Wednesday: 7pm-8:30pm (Optional, uncoached weights/core circuit)
Thursday: 3:30pm-5:30pm (Water Session)
Sunday: 10:00am-12:00pm (Water Session)
We have been lucky enough to already put this plan into action this week, with several singles, doubles and quads taking to the Nith. Have a wee look at the photos below and stay tuned for more updates throughout the best part of our season!

Club Ceilidh - March 2018
It's been an exciting month at CUCBC, as we hosted our annual club ceilidh on Saturday 24th March. After weeks of preparation, it was great for everything to finally come together, as we welcomed around 40 guests into the club. With local ceilidh band, What the Folk, putting on a great set, all who showed up were greeted with great music, drinks, dancing and company. At the very end of the night our Men's Captain, Andrew, hijacked the band and went on a 5 minute long jazz solo with the drummer. While we unfortunately didn't get all of the set, we did manage to catch a wee bit, which you can see below.
We are also delighted to report that we made a good profit from the night, which will be put back into the club to help us push on both in and out of training in the coming year. Special mention to all those at the club who helped to organise the night, especially social convenors Jonny & Mia and Secretary, Orla. Thanks again to all those who came and made it such a great night, we hope to see you again next year!

Movember Fundraising 2017
Throughout November we have been trying to raise money for the Movember UK Foundation, which helps the fight against testicular & prostate cancer in men, while also helping men through mental health issues. We're aiming to raise £150 and to do this we are trying to row 467.5km - the distance from our boathouse to the River Thames - by the end of the month.
Almost two weeks into the task and things are looking positive, with around 200km already completed and over half of our target money already raised! The team have been great so far and have really taken to the task, as you can see from the photos below. We have just over two weeks to hit our target, and you can keep up to date with our progress and make a donation at out Mo Space account.

Freshers Fare & Taster Sessions 2017
With the university semester starting up again, it’s been a busy couple of weeks for the club. Last week we headed down to the Crichton Campus Fresher’s Fayre to try and sign up some new members to the club, with new club captain, Sophie, heading up the recruitment drive.
It was a successful day, with a number of students signing up for our three free taster sessions, and it was especially great to get a group with mixed abilities, with some having rowed before, while others were just keen to give rowing a go for the first time!
We then moved onto the taster sessions this week, giving those who signed up a chance to experience both water and indoor sessions at the club. Club coach, Paul, got our new members out on boats on Monday - with pictures below - and it was great to see them all taking to the water so well. On Wednesday night we then gave them a taste of our indoor sessions, with a mix of ergo, weight and circuit training.
All round it’s been a very promising start to the semester and we’re all excited about the progress the club can make with it’s new members!
*If you missed us at the Fresher’s Fayre and are keen to give rowing a go, just contact us on the Facebook or Twitter links above and come down to the club for your 3 free taster sessions.

Refreshers Training Camp 2017
With the start of a new year and all of our athletes returning well rested after a much-needed Christmas break, club coach, Paul West, thought it would be a good idea to hold the clubs first 'Refreshers Training Camp', giving everyone a chance to work on their fitness with some indoor ergo work, while also getting back out on the water.
We began on Saturday morning with an indoor session during which everyone completed a 1km test. Despite only having one week of training behind them, everyone produced a new personal best time, and this shows just how far our freshers have come in such a short space of time. And if you need anymore proof that they put in maximum effort, head over to out Photos section to check out some of the photos taken from the morning! On Saturday afternoon we made the most of the stunning weather and got two quads out on the water, and this gave Paul a great chance to see how everyone was getting on after a few weeks off the water. Finally, we ended the day with a quiet social at Greens Pub, and a few fairly competitive games of pool.
On Sunday we got straight out on the water, with the main goal being to try out race pieces with different scratch crews. With two boats racing against each other and constantly changing crews, this was the perfect opportunity for many of our Freshers to experience what it is like to race, while again allowing different crews to be tested together in the lead up to the 2017 race season. While there were some shaky starts to some of the race pieces, everyone seemed to get the hang of it towards the end, and if you want to view the progress made, head over to our Videos section.
Overall, this was a really successful weekend for the club, and is something we will look to continue in the years to come!

Christmas Night Out & Christmas Row 2016
We've been getting into the Christmas spirit at CUCBC in the last few weeks, heading out for annaul Christmas night out and then holding our first Christmas themed rowing session. Everyone at the club took the opportunity to get dressed up - with Christmas jumpers even being worn - when we headed to Primo Piano for a great meal, followed by one or two drinks on Thursday December 1st.
The focus was soon back on rowing, as we then held out first 'Christmas rowing session' on Sunday December 11th, with two quads heading out full of festive cheer! Have a look at some of the photos below, and check out the rest in the Gallery section of our website. With a lot of the team heading back home for Christmas, our training schedule will now start to wind down over the next few weeks, but it has been a very productive first half of the season for CUCBC, and the positive work will continue again after everyone is back from a relaxing and well-deserved Christmas break.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from everyone at CUCBC!

Strathclyde Park Rowing Camp - 26th-27th October 2016
This weekend 15 of the club's athletes headed up to Glasgow for a Winter training camp at Strathclyde Park to make use of the indoor rowing tank and get some time out on the water. However, due to the weather conditions we were unable to get out on the water, so this meant a weekend full of technique in the tank. We started with three tank sessions across the weekend, we started with a bit of sculling in the morning and then sweep rowing in the afternoon. Led by our coach, Paul, everyone got some vital input on their technique, especially when sweep rowing, as this is something we have not had a lot of opportunities to do so far this year. It wasn't all hard work though, as on Saturday night the team headed out in Glasgow for a much deserved meal and the odd drink too! While there may have been a few sore heads in the morning, Sunday was another successful day, with some more high-tempo rowing getting everyone working hard and reaping the benefits of the tank session.
Pictures will be uploaded to the Gallery section of our website soon, but in the meantime check out the full video created by club member, Laura, in Videos.
All round it was a great weekend and we hope to head back up to Strathclyde Park in the New Year for another training camp! Finally, thanks to everyone who helped plan out the weekend, to University of Glasgow for helping fund the trip, and to Scottish Rowing for providing the facilities.

2016 Annual General Meeting - 18th October 2016
The club had it's AGM on the 18th of October to look back the achievements of the previous year and elect new members to the committee. It proved to have been a highly successful year for the club, with a host of both gold and silver medals being won by Fiona Munro, Pablo Garcia, Jess Ross, Kieran Flood and Julien Bodart during the summer racing season, well done guys! This past year also seen the club purchase it's first boat, which was recently named and unveiled as the Elizabeth Crichton by Professor David Clark of Glasgow University (See News below). Finally, the club was able to create a logo, with the help of artist and club member, Kieran Flood.
We moved on to electing new members to the committee, with the most notable change coming in the captain's position. Long serving Captain, Julien, is graduating, so his place was filled by Fiona Munro. The Men's and Women's Captain positions were filled by Pablo Garcia and Orla Farrell respectively, while Matthew Leslie was installed as Secretary. Encouragingly, the positions of Treasurer and Social Convenor were taken by a pair of enthusiastic Freshers in Leo Lepple and Laura Alonso. Congrats to everyone and here's to another successful year of rowing!

Boat Naming Ceremony - 19th of September 2016
Thank you to everyone who came down to our boat naming ceremony to officially welcome Elizabeth Crichton to our fleet. Elizabeth Crichton is a brand new Janousek coxed quad/four that we purchased in July 2016 and is the first boat that CUCBC owns, along with four sets of brand new sculling blades. It represents a milestone in the history of the club and we are all very proud of it! Thank you to the The Holywood Trust, Crichton Foundation and the Awards for All program of Sports Scotland for providing us with all the funding. Thank you to David Clark for christening the boat and for Scottish Rowing Jonathan Cheyne for coming all the way down from Glasgow. Hope you all enjoyed the day and we hope you had a good time.

Boat naming ceremony - Monday the 19th of September 2016 5PM - The Boathouse (Dumfries).
The Crichton University Campus Boat Club is inviting all members of the public – staff and students, or otherwise – to join us in the celebration of our BRAND NEW rowing boat on Monday the 19th September. Since the establishment of the University Boat Club in 2012, it has grown from strength to strength with the help of local rowing club, Nithsdale Amateur RC. This year, however, marks an important milestone for CUCBC as the club succeeded in securing enough funding from the Crichton Foundation, the Holywood Trust, and the Awards for All program from Sports Scotland to buy its very own high-quality racing boat and new Club Performance blades.
The boat will be christened by Professor David Clark, former Director of the University of Glasgow - Crichton Campus and long-term supporter of the University Club. The ceremony will take place at 5PM on Monday the 19th September at the NARC boathouse on Greensands, Dumfries. Scottish Rowing representatives will also be present at the ceremony, along with members of the Dumfries community and members of the two respective rowing clubs. We hope to see as many staff and students as possible from the Crichton to support Pr. David Clark and their fellow campus rowers.
Some light refreshments and cakes will also be provided to raise funds for the club.
If you have any questions, please do get in touch by emailing us at [email protected] or by visiting our website at www.cucboatclub.weebly.com and our Facebook/Twitter pages (@CUCBC).
Remember we will also be present at the Fresher's Fair on Wednesday the 15th to promote the club. Our first taster session will take place on Friday the 16th of September in the afternoon. More information will be available from our stand next Wednesday so don't hesitate to come chat to our rowers regarding the first taster session and the boat naming ceremony.
We are looking forward to seeing you all on Monday the 19th to celebrate this big achievement with all of you.

Tees Regatta - Saturday 21st May 2016
Crichton University Campus BC rowers headed to Teeside this Saturday for the Tees Regatta. First on the course was the Women's Novice Double scull with Fiona Munro (stroke) and Jessica Ross (bow) who easily qualified for the semi-final after finishing first in their heat. After a short break, they were back again on the course for their semi-final where they finished second. In their final, the girls rowed very hard and managed to overtake two crews to finish second overall. For the second regatta in a row, they were the second fastest crew out of 10+ crews competing for gold medal - a big achievement! Next up was the Men's IM3 Coxed Quad with one CUCBC sculler in the boat. This boat won the event after beating a crew from Durham RC. Gold was also won by one CUCBC member who coxed the Women's IM3 Quad composed of Nithsdale ARC rowers. Following those races, the Men's Novice Double scull was in action on the water with Kieran Flood (stroke) and Pablo Garcia (bow). Their last fifteen stroke lift brought them neck to neck with a crew from Castle Semple but unfortunately they were unable to catch up and lost by half a canvas in their semi-final. The last crew on the water was the Men's IM2 single scull who won gold after beating a fellow rower from Nithsdale ARC and another one from Talkin Tarn RC in final. Overall, we saw some very good results, which reflect how hard our rowers have trained over the last couple of months. They have achieved so much already, with three more regattas to go. The next regatta CUCBC will attend is Hexham Regatta in two weeks. Below is a photo of the Women's Novice Double (left) and one of the Men's Novice Double (right).
Club History at Nithsdale Annual Regatta (Dumfries) - Saturday 30th April 2016
It was a great day for all our crews racing at Nithsdale Regatta on the River Nith (Dumfries), with gold medals in the Res 2 Quad, Res 2 Four and Res 2 single scull. The 2016 Nithsdale Regatta was also historical for the club, as it was the first regatta where full CUCBC crews were racing, as opposed to our athletes racing in composite boats in the previous years. The novice mixed quad, composed of CUCBC's athletes Pablo Garcia, Kieran Flood, Fiona Munro and Jessica Ross just missed on the final in their first race of the day despite putting on a strong performance against an experienced Castle Semple crew. Later on, the women's novice double scull with Fiona Munro and Jessica Ross qualified easily to the final but finished second, just behind Castle Semple. The last race of the day for our novice rowers was the men's novice double scull with Pablo Garcia and Kieran Flood who fought very hard and despite an impressive race lost against a very good crew from Strathclyde Park Rowing Club.
Congratulations to all our rowers for the hard work they have put in over the last few weeks and for doing so well at their first ever regatta. The racing experience gained on Saturday will serve as a basis for the rest of the season!

Rowing Camp 2015 - Strathclyde Country Park (Glasgow)
The whole team headed to Strathclyde Country Park for a two-day rowing camp on the weekend of the 21st and the 22nd of November. The camp consisted of one one-hour session in the rowing tank followed by a two-hour water session on both days. Athletes were able to practice their sculling technique on the tank on the Saturday and sweep rowing on the Sunday and were filmed all the way through. Training sessions were tailored for all levels of abilities although the freshers squad received most of the attention from senior rowers and coaches. You can view a video of the camp on the website under the heading Video. We thank the University of Glasgow - School of Interdisciplinary Studies for their financial support!
Great photo of our new freshers training on the Nith this week. If you are still looking at joining us, please email us at [email protected] or visit our Facebook page or Twitter page.

Talkin Tarn Regatta 04 July 2015
Yesterday we were at Talkin Tarn Regatta near Brampton for the last rowing competition of the season. Unfortunately, the first races in the morning had to be delayed due to severe thunderstorm and torrential rains. The first crew on the water for CUCBC was a composite with NARC in the ONov 2x who received gold after successfully winning their heat, semi-final and final. The second crew to win gold was the Women Novice Eight. It was also a composite boat with NARC and CUCBC and with our Women's Captain stroking the boat. They won their straight final against a crew from Durham ARC. Another crew on the water was the Women Intermediate 3 Quad who finished second in their final. In the second division, the Open IM3 Single scull qualified for the final and finished second in his event. The third crew to win gold was the Men's IM3 Four who beat a crew from Durham ARC. The last two boats on the water were the Women IM3 Double scull and the Men's Elite Coxless Quad. The WIM3 2x did not manage to qualify for the final and the Elite Quad finished third in his straight final.
Well done to all our crews on the water for the last regatta of the season! Now, it is time for us to relax a bit and enjoy the summer season on the water!
Scottish Championships - 13/14 May 2015
Great weekend at the Scottish Championships for our rowers! On Saturday, the first crew on the water was the Open single who qualified for the Final G and finished in 5th position. Later on, the Men's Novice Quad with CUCBC/NARC Composite finished first in their final and received the gold medal (first gold medal for the club). Well done to them! The Women's Novice Double finished 4th in final and the Women's Intermediate Double finished 4th in the final. On Sunday, the weather was slightly worse in the morning but the conditions on the water were still pretty good. The two Women's Novice Quads were our first crews on the water. The first one finished 6th in their heat. The second CUCBC/NARC quad battled through the race to finish second and received the silver medal! Later on, the Novice Coxed Four with Heriot-Watt Uni BC/Stirling RC/CUCBC finished third in their heat. This race was later followed by our last crew on the water: the Open Intermediate Double which despite being 7th in the first 500 meters managed to pull hard to finish at the third position. Well done to all our athletes who were competing at this year's Scottish Champs and we hope to have many more wins next year!

Nithsdale Annual Regatta 2015
On Saturday the 11th of April, our rowers competed in the Nithsdale Annual Regatta in Dumfries. Most of our crews consisted of our freshers who raced at novice level, as well as our Women's Captain who raced at both novice and Res2 level. The boat categories entered included six quads, one double (first full CUCBC crew since the establishment of the club), and one four. Despite the lack of water time over the winter, all CUCBC athletes performed very well, winning three events in total (WNov 4+, Nov Mix 4x+, WRes2 4x+). This is a promising start for the racing season ahead and we look forward to seeing them on the race course within the next few weeks and months. Well done to the other NARC athletes for winning a few more medals and congratulations to Nithsdale for the organisation of the regatta and for celebrating their 150th Anniversary this year.

Nithsdale Annual Regatta
For the third year in a row, CUCBC will be participating in the Nithsdale Annual Regatta on the River Nith on Saturday the 11th of April. This year is a special year as it celebrates the 150th anniversary of our fellow club: NARC. Everyone is welcome to come cheer our students on from 10am until 4pm. We entered a Women's Novice Quad, Women's Res2 Quad, Women's Novice Double (first full CUCBC crew to ever race), two Mixed Quads, Women's Novice Four, and a Men's Novice Quad! Most of our crews are composed of freshers who only started rowing in September but have done amazingly well so far. So let's hope to see many lecturers, students, staff, and other people from Dumfries come to this event and support our local campus students!
Merry Christmas to everyone ! Enjoy the winter break and see you back on the water in January!
This Saturday (22/11/14) we were at Strathclyde Park for a rowing camp with our senior and fresher crews. We first used the rowing tank and then jumped into boats to perform our sweep rowing technique. Beautiful day for a row especially when it's just our crews on the lake ! We thank the University of Glasgow - School of Interdisciplinary Studies for their help in funding this trip.
New academic year !
It is finally this time of the year ! The time when we bring new faces into the club and make new friends. We will be at the Freshers Fair on Wednesday the 17th with some surprises for our future rowers! We will also be at the Society Mixer on Thursday night (@ theQueensberry) so get yourself down for those two big events on campus and don't hesitate to come and talk to us. We are always happy to invite beginners or more advanced rowers to join the club. If you are not so keen on sport but would like to be part of the team, there is no worries - we are also looking for people willing to get involved in the organization of the team. You can hold several positions such as Captain of the Club, Men's or Women's captain, Club Secretary, Club Treasurer, or even Social convenor ! No need to know much about rowing, as long as you are an enthusiastic individual who is willing to participate in the development of the club, then CUCBC is for you :)
Castle Semple Regatta (Glasgow) 2014

Congrats to them ! The boys intermediate four did well too and finished 5th in their final. We also entered a Women's Novice Single who finished 3rd ! The last race of the day was the Men's Intermediate Single who finished 2nd in his final after a very very close race won by Strathclyde University. Hexham Regatta (North East England) 2014
What a day we spent down south! Despite severe weather warnings, our team set off to Hexham in order to compete with teams from Northern England. After a long day under the rain and with feet covered in mud, our rowers came back with two well deserved gold medals and some good results. The Men's Novice Four were the first on the water and comfortably made it through the final. They later went onto winning their first gold medal as a Novice crew. The second crew was the Women's Intermediate 3 Four who was racing for the first time in their four at Intermediate Level. After a very close and exciting final, their opponents managed to take the lead in the last 50 meters and won the race. However, the girls can be very proud of their efforts as they raced very well and have something to aim for next season ! The Men's Intermediate 3 Four was also racing but lost against a very good crew from Durham University who went onto winning the event. The last race of the day was Laura in the Women Novice Single who brought the second medal of the day after two very impressive races where she battled through each race and certainly showed the other female rowers what she was made of ! Well done to all of our crews and members for this fantastic day at Hexham.
Good results @ Scottish Championships 2014
We had a great weekend in Glasgow at the Scottish Champs bringing back a silver medal won by our ONov4+! The Men's Four final was very close between CUCBC/NARC/SRC composite and Strathclyde University and Glasgow University. The Glasgow Uni crew managed to take the lead in the last ten strokes and won the gold medal by 0.4 seconds from our CUCBC crew. Great race for everyone who came to cheer us!
The other races of the weekend were also very good and featured some high level races especially the WNov 4+ who were fighting for their 5th place in Final. The Men's single scull final was also very close and was won by CUCBC after an exciting race between one of our CUCBC member and one athlete from Nithsdale ARC.
Here is a photo of the Men's four on the podium after their final and a photo of the girls four crossing the line.
Congrats to all our members for their effort and hard work throughout the season !!
